The notion of suffrage is integral to a democratic set-up. It is based on the idea of the consent of the governed and as such this system is eulogized over and above that of the structure wherein government is “imposed on unwilling subjects” and perhaps “political change is best accomplished through the ballot box rather than on the battlefield or in the streets”. This establishes the importance of voting. It acts as a medium of liaison which connects the citizens to the Government and in fact, ensures peaceful transfer of power based on popular mandate.
